Vihangam Yog Canada

Toronto—Between sits

Ten minutes in the morning.Ten in the evening.

Free guided meditation, taught in plain language. Beginners welcome.

Most of us want a little more calm in our day.

Vihangam Yog is a way of meditating that fits around work, study and family. We practise it together across Canada, and anyone is welcome to join us.

The origin

A practice taught openly, for anyone who wished to learn.

In 1924, after seventeen years of meditation, Anant Shri Sadguru Sadafal Deo Ji Maharaj rediscovered this ancient practice. He taught it openly to everyone, and wrote the Swarved, the scripture of this science of consciousness, so it would be kept as he taught it.

Today it is carried by the presiding Sadguru, Sadguru Shri Swatantra Deo Ji Maharaj, and practised in more than 50 countries as Brahma Vidyā.

The Swarved Mahamandir in Varanasi, opened in December 2023, is one of the largest meditation centres in the world, with verses of the Swarved carved into its walls. See the Mahamandir

The name

The path of the bird.

When people hear yoga, they often think of postures and breathing. Vihangam Yog is Yog in its older sense: a meditation explained in plain language, practised for ten minutes in the morning and ten in the evening.

Vihangam means of the bird: a direct path inward, like a bird in flight, rather than one that winds along the ground.

The practice

All you need is a place to sit and ten quiet minutes.

We call the daily practice Abhyās: ideally around sunrise, and again around sunset.

Morning, 10 min

Sit as the day begins. Settle, and turn gently inward.

Evening, 10 min

Sit as the day closes. Let the noise of the day fall away.

The evidence

Researchers have measured what happens in meditation.

Neuroscientists in India and Italy have studied Vihangam Yog meditation using 192-channel EEG recordings.

Alpha power

A significant increase in alpha-wave power and coherence across all brain regions.

Delta & theta

A marked decrease in delta and theta power, correlated with reports of perceiving inner light.

Inner light

Practitioners in Samādhi report an inner light during meditation, and the EEG recordings are consistent with it.

State-specific EEG study by Dr. Ravi Prakash et al., Central Institute of Psychiatry, Ranchi, with the University of Bergamo. Research ongoing in India, Italy, Russia and the USA.

The ripple

The practice leads to service.

Around the world, Vihangam Yog organisations run health programs, free schooling, environmental projects and humanitarian work, because the teaching holds that inner practice should lead to the service of others.
